Professional Opportunity: Family Practitioners, Antigonish, Nova Scotia

St. Martha’s Regional Hospital (SMRH), Antigonish, is seeking family practitioners to be part of the 25-member family practice team to replace retiring physicians. Interested candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and the College of Family Physicians of Canada. There is opportunity for the applicants to engage in research and/or have medical teaching positions with Dalhousie Medical School, should that be of interest. Current remuneration arrangement is primarily fee for service, with other arrangements in place for some specific areas of practice. 

The family practice team in Antigonish enjoys a wide scope of practice and a variety of practice arrangements that can be tailored to suit your interests, training and expertise. Collaborative and traditional office positions, clinic positions, emergency, and hospital shifts are all available, as is the potential to cover local long term care facilities. Those wishing to offer low risk obstetrical care are welcomed. Sports medicine and addiction medicine opportunities, OR assists, ambulatory care clinics for minor procedures are all possible here. SMRH has an extremely helpful, efficient and friendly staff that make working here a pleasure.

SMRH, founded in 1906 by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha, is now owned by the Province of NS, but still maintains membership with the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada. SMRH is a regional, ~90-bed, acute care facility, strategically located half way between Halifax and Sydney, providing a wide range of primary and secondary inpatient and outpatient services, including dialysis, as well as providing services through satellite clinics. With more than 60 physicians practicing in a variety of specialties and sub-specialties, SMRH serves a direct catchment area of about 45,000 from Antigonish and surrounding communities, with many more travelling from Pictou County and Western Cape Breton for regional services. Inpatient care at SMRH is provided by hospitalist physicians as well as colleagues in family medicine, internal medicine (general and subspecialty, covering a 6 bed ICU), emergency medicine, geriatrics, general surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, ob/gyn, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, anaesthesia, radiology (U/S, CT, MRI, ECHO), dentistry and palliative care, with visiting oncology and neurology services. Community-based care is delivered through collaborative and traditional practices, both men’s and a women’s health centres, a university health centre, a chronic pain clinic, a methadone clinic, a walk-in clinic, and a youth clinic at the local high school.
